Gepubliceerd: 3 October 2017 • Leestijd: 2 minuten en 46 seconden • English Dit artikel is meer dan een jaar oud.

Studying or doing an internship abroad takes a great deal of preparation. Profielen has created this nifty step-by-step plan for you. Looking for more info?

1. Start a year in advance

The most important tip of all is for you to start on time, ideally one year in advance. Investigate the various options; where would you be able to go, and in which year of your study programme? This differs from one institute or programme to the next. Go to your institute’s internationalisation coordinator or the CoIA (Centre of International Affairs) of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (coia-exchange@hr.nl, 010-794 60 05).

2. When should you enrol?

If you want to go abroad in September, you will need to enrol in January/February, whereas if you want to go in February, you will need to enrol in September/October. The precise deadlines differ from programme to programme; as do the requirements for being allowed to study abroad, so make sure you get the information you need!

3. Always apply for a scholarship

Once you have enrolled, you can start looking for scholarships for your programme or internship. If you are going to an EU country, you qualify for the Erasmus+ scholarship. The amount differs each year and from country to country, but is generally around 200 euros a month. If you are leaving Europe, you can apply for the RUAS Explorer scholarship (a one-off grant of 200-300 euros) and the Holland Scholarship (for study programmes, internships, or research studies outside of the EER – a one-off grant of 1,250 euros). The Holland Scholarship is a joint effort by RUAS and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The deadlines for the Erasmus+ and Explorer scholarships are May 1st and November 15th, and the deadline for the Holland Scholarship is March 31st.

There are many other scholarships apart from this one that you might qualify for.
Go to www.wilweg.nl/beursopener for an overview. Take your time with this, it could save you a lot of money overall!

4. Converting your student travel card into a reimbursement

If you still qualify for a study grant from the government, you have the option of taking that with you when you go abroad, as a grant for students living away from home. As for your student travel card, you can convert that into a reimbursement. The amount you will receive if you do changes each year but is generally around 90 euros. You can take care of these matters via www.duo.nl, and you will need to do so two months before you leave at the latest.

5. Visa

If you are going to an EU country, you will not need a visa. However, there are some countries in Europe that are not part of the EU for which a visa is required. Applying for a student visa for one of these countries is a relatively quick procedure. Matters are different for non-European countries; usually, you need to apply well in advance for visas to these countries, and the wait until your visa is actually approved can take a long time, so start on time! Go to www.wilweg.nl/landen to find out if you will need a visa, and if so, what kind.

6. Room in town or on campus

Almost all partner universities have facilities to help you find suitable accommodation. Things can be trickier if you are doing an internship instead of a study programme. Of course, you can always try to look for a room yourself. Ask your partner university or the company you will be interning with if there are any reliable websites or agencies they would recommend that might be able to help you. You can go to www.wilweg.nl/documentatie/begrotingen.pdf to find out what the average rental prices are in the country or city of your choosing. This page contains other useful information about prices and currencies as well.

7. Register your address abroad with RUAS

As of this academic year, students who go abroad are required to register their address abroad with RUAS so that you can be easily found in case of an emergency. Check article 9.4 of the Student Handbook to find out more.
