Current British HR student will retain rights in case of a ‘hard’ Brexit

British citizens enrolled at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (HR) – 65 at the moment – will not have to worry about their status should the United Kingdom leave the European Union without any kind of deal. They will be able to continue their studies under the same conditions as before.

Secretary of Foreign Affairs Blok wrote to the Dutch Lower House that British students in the Netherlands will retain their current rights to financial assistance after 30 March in case of a so-called ‘no deal’ Brexit scenario. They will moreover not have to pay more than the statutory tuition, although they will have to meet all other conditions for EU citizens.

At the moment, the HR is host to 65 British students: 49 are enrolled in bachelor programmes, 15 are doing master programmes, and one is studying for an associate degree.

Deal or no deal?

In case of a no-deal scenario, any British students enrolling at Dutch academic institutes after the Brexit will be considered citizens from outside the European Economic Area. Just like e.g. Chinese students, these British students will have to pay the increased tuition and will not be eligible for financial assistance.

The British House will vote on prime minister Theresa May’s Brexit proposal on Tuesday 15 January. The vote was planned for last December, but it was postponed when May feared she lacked proper support for her plans.
