Volgens Annabel is ReMind ‘a reminder to reconnect with your mind’. Vijf minuten is genoeg.
‘Our Generation No Longer Knows How to Take a Break’, say the Students Behind ReMind
Nearly half of Dutch students, 44 percent, struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety and stress. A group of International Business students saw the problem not only in the data, but also in themselves and their friends. They decided to use their second-year student venture to look for solutions.
‘Many young people between the ages of 16 and 28 are going through a challenging transitional phase,’ says International Business student Annabel Schajbel, who serves as the procurement manager within the student team. ‘Students face a high workload. Many of them have substantial jobs alongside their studies, and of course they also have a personal life.’
‘Scrolling through TikTok is not a break; it only fills your head with even more stimuli.’
It is therefore not surprising that stress is so common. And, Annabel says: ‘Our generation no longer knows how to take a break. We immediately reach for our phones. Scrolling through TikTok is not a break; it only fills your head with even more stimuli. You lose the enjoyment of your hobbies, even though you actually have time for them. Just take a look at your screen time.’
The team chose this theme for their second-year student venture, a project in which International Business students launch and run their own businesses in groups. They named their startup ReMind, with the slogan: ‘Small steps, a calmer you.’ According to Annabel, ReMind is ‘a reminder to reconnect with your mind.’ ‘We want to help people take an intentional break. Five minutes is enough. It’s manageable, even when you feel like you have no time or mental space.’
Pause in a box
To give people practical tools to relax, the ReMind team put together a package containing products that each contribute to a sense of calm in their own way. On their website, they describe it as ‘a pause button in a box.’ Every item is linked to a relaxation technique, whether through focusing on the senses, journaling, or breathing exercises. The idea is that users can discover what works best for them. ‘People are simply different,’ says Annabel.
The team devoted a great deal of attention to the journal included in the package. ‘People in our focus groups told us, ‘I’d like to write, but I don’t know where to start.’ Blank pages can be intimidating. That’s why we added structure, with pages where you can write things such as what you’re grateful for or what went well today.’ Senoa Soet, the team’s HR manager, adds: ‘There are also blank pages for people who simply want to write or draw freely.’
‘Initially, we had a wider variety of products, but during our most recent focus group we concluded that there should actually be fewer.’
‘We put a lot of thought into what should be included in the package,’ says Senoa. ‘Initially, we had a wider variety of products, but during our most recent focus group we concluded that there should actually be fewer. People live in smaller spaces and often want fewer things.’ As a result of the final focus group, the team made several adjustments. ‘We added a lavender-scented candle,’ says Senoa. ‘Our research showed that lavender has a calming effect.’
The first academic block focused on research: identifying a problem and finding a solution in the form of a product or service. Another important assignment during that period was finding investors who could provide the required €1,500 in startup capital. Coincidentally, the final share has just been sold.
Launch before Christmas
Now that the funding is secured and the package is definite, the team can move on to the next phase: procurement. Annabel is responsible for that task. ‘We source all our products from the Netherlands or Germany, which is more sustainable,’ she says. The proximity of suppliers also helps speed up delivery. ‘We wanted to accelerate our process because we hope to launch before Christmas.’ ‘People really see this as a gift set,’ says Senoa. ‘We also want to create special editions for occasions such as Valentine’s Day or Mental Health Month.’
The website is ready, and over the coming weeks the students will promote their product through social media. ‘We’d like to create an advent calendar, for example, with an inspirational quote or a giveaway every day,’ says Annabel. In addition, the team plans to share educational content about mental health.
Intense and hectic
The next phase will be the most exciting: proving that the idea is commercially viable. That will determine whether they can repay their shareholders and perhaps even distribute a small profit. ‘I would really love that,’ says Annabel.
Secretly, the students already regret having to shut down the company at the end of the academic year. Because it is a school project, they are exempt from many administrative obligations, such as registering with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce.
The project is intense and hectic. Within the seven-person team, everyone has their own specialty, but they also step in wherever needed. ‘Our Chief Financial Officer, Jhons, also happens to be technically skilled and built the website,’ says Senoa. ‘Others worked on the texts, photography, and illustrations.’ Soon, they will also be packing and shipping orders themselves. ‘We see it as a team-building activity.’
‘Everyone in our group is incredibly motivated,’ they say. ‘And we keep wanting to raise the bar a little higher.’
The students constantly find themselves with more ideas than time, but that does not discourage them. ‘Everyone in our group is incredibly motivated,’ they say. ‘And we keep wanting to raise the bar a little higher.’
So what do they do themselves to relax and prevent stress? Senoa: ‘Staying active. Sports have always helped me relax. And when I have the time, I also keep a journal. It helps me put my thoughts somewhere other than just inside my head.’ Annabel: ‘I read and paint a lot in my free time. I also consciously choose media that isn’t overly stimulating, such as movies or TV shows I watched as a child. And I go on a lot of walks.’
